My Mobiles

Mobile technology changes faster than anything else that we spend our money on. The phone that sits on the table connected to the socket in your house may have happily sat there for 10 years or more before needing to be replaced. But during that ten years it would not be unusual for you to have replaced your mobile phone 5, 6, 7 times or more because you felt that the model that you had was obsolete.

Recently, I began to wonder how many mobile phones I had been through since getting my first one. With the aid of Google, I have discovered that I am on my ninth phone since 1999.

Here they are...

PHILLIPS SAVVY
1999 - 2001

This was my first phone and made me feel like one of the well off people who had owned mobiles for many years before me. I think I bought it in 1999 in the Virgin Megastore at Carlisle. It was rather bulky in the pocket, so was mostly carried around in the hand. I don't think I had much use out of it really, because not many other people that I knew owned a mobile at the time.

MOTOROLA V2288
2001 - 2003

I had no reason to replace my phone back in 2001, but I used to enter a lot of competitions at the time, and I won this from Computer Shopper magazine. They actually sent me two by accident, so I sold one of them on eBay. This model was a but curvier, and slightly easier to slip into the pocket, but still too bulky really. Someone stole this from my jacket pocket in the Three Tuns one day (I know who it was if you are reading this!). It was returned to me by an honest cleaner who found it in the bin in the toilets on the market. The thief had realized that they couldn't use or sell it because I had pin-locked both the phone and the sim card. I had put a name and address label on the battery.

ERICCSON T28
2003 - 2004

This was my first contract phone. I liked this little guy. The folding mouthpiece meant that it was much smaller than my previous phones, and despite the external arial, slipped into the pocket easily. It was probably the first phone that went with me everywhere I went.

SENDO M550
2004 - 2005

My first 'clamshell' phone. A better design than before, with a useful clock display on the outside of the case. It was of rather cheap construction though, with a very plasticy feel to it. i was glad when the contract ran out and I was able to replace this one.

SAMSUNG SGH-E700
2005 - 2006

These Samsung clamshell phones were an excellent design. The construction felt solid and there was a satisfying click when you opened or closed them. This was my first cameraphone and many a picture was taken using it. it felt good in the hand and fit easily into the pocket.

SAMSUNG SGH-E715
2006 - 2007

I liked my Samsung so much, that when the time came for a free upgrade I wasn't interested in changing the model too much and just went for the next step up in the Samsung range. Better camera, flash and other improvements still within the same great design.

SONY-ERICSSON K800i
2007 - 2008

I remember being quite excited about the end of my contract and the prospect of getting the K800i for free, mainly because of the great quality of the camera. It was a little more bulky in the pocket than the clamshells, but it was worth it. This was my first phone that could access the internet too.

SONY-ERICSSON P1i
2008 - 2010

Another good upgrade. My first touch-screen phone and a qwerty keypad. One of the main reasons I chose this phone was because you could create and edit documents on it. I needed to do this for work at the time, but in truth, I never actually used the phone for this task in the end.

NOKIA 5800 XPRESSMUSIC
2010 - 2012

My first fully touchscreen phone. My intention with this one was to put my music on it so that I didn't have to carry a phone and an iPod around while walking. As usual, I didn't get around to it! This was a great phone, but was the only one I ever owned that developed a fault.

SAMSUNG GALAXY SII
2012 - Now

So this is my current phone. Back to Samsung, who have probably been my favourite manufacturer, all things considered. This phone is amazing. It is the largest phone I have ever owned, but it also the slimmest - so no problem getting it in the jeans pocket. The screen size is important when using the internet, so it's a different situation than when smaller was better. Carrying the S2 is like carrying a computer in your pocket. I just hope that the large glass screen survives it's 2-year journey in my pocket!
